how-to-become-an-expert

I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts lately on my commute, and yesterday’s selection was Chalene Johnson. I listened to two of hers yesterday and oddly enough she had a very similar message included in both. Specifically she said “I’m not THE expert in this area, I am an expert on what has worked for me.”

“I am not THE expert in this area, I am an expert on what has worked for me.”

I am not a personal trainer or a certified nutritionist. I am not a business coach or marketing guru. But I AM a working mom who has been through a significant weight loss and has maintained that loss for five years. I am a working mom who makes time in her life every day for fitness, figures out ways to make healthier food choices, goes to a full time job Monday to Friday, spends time with her family and works a business from home.

I am a working mom who struggles every day with “mom guilt”for having that full time job. I am a working mom who had a cupcake for lunch yesterday because it was the ONLY food option and I had been booked into back to back meetings. I am a working mom to a kid with ADHD and I worry every day about how best to support him. I am a working mom who worries I don’t give my husband enough attention. I am a working mom who feels alone and unsure at least five times a day.

I am a working mom that loves helping people achieve their goals. I am a working mom that wants to help other working moms make time in their busy schedules to live healthier lives. I am a working mom that believes that you HAVE TO take care of yourself or you might not be around to take care of others.

You have to take care of yourself or you might not be around to take care of others.

I am not an expert, but I am an expert on what has worked for me. I can share THAT experience. Take it, modify it, make it your own. We all have our own specific challenges and opportunities but if we take what we have IN COMMON and then adapt it to our own lives, we might have a solution.

Sometimes, we need to seek out THE expert. A doctor for a specific condition, someone who has schooling and certification in your specific area. But sometimes you just need to know that someone LIKE YOU hears you, understands where you’re coming from, has been through some or all of it themsleves and wants to help you figure your stuff out. And that’s the kind of expert I am.
