I am currently listening to Gary Vaynerchuk’s latest book on Audible, #AskGaryVee. (Side note: This post is NOT about the book or the audio book, but I absolutely recommend it. He’s awesome and I would definitely recommend the audio book because Gary reads it himself AND adds in updated info and his tangents that aren’t in the book.)

So, as I said, that’s not why I am writing this post. I’m writing this because of something that he said a number of time throughout the book, that has really connected for me with where I am right now. A few times in the book he used the phrase “You do you.”

be-yourself-2YOU DO YOU.

As in, be yourself, don’t try to be anyone else, just DO YOU.

I was recently at an event and the guest speaker spoke a lot about not comparing yourself to anyone else. It really brought home again the “you do you” theme.

With social media and the constant onslaught of everyone’s “highlight reel,” it is so easy to get caught up in comparing yourself, your life, your fitness, your accomplishments. But it is just that – a HIGHLIGHT REEL. Everyone out there is going through something, feeling self conscious or inadequate about something, unsure about a choice or decision, feeling guilty about something… because they are HUMAN. And it’s NORMAL.

Only compare yourself to the person you were yesterday. You are in competition with no one but yourself. Spend more time getting to truly be comfortable with who YOU are, instead of constantly comparing yourself with someone else. Theodore Roosevelt said “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and it is SO TRUE. Very few people compare themselves with someone else and think “I’m doing okay, I feel pretty good.”
Comparison invariably leads to feeling “less than.” And there is NO REASON to feel that way. You have your own incredible talents, strengths, abilities and knowledge and once you truly recognize and build on those, you will realize that how you “measure up” against others really DOESN’T MATTER.

So here’s the thing. You, you beautiful, powerful, awesome, amazing human being. YOU DO YOU. And just “do you” exceptionally well.

Because you are awesome. <3
